As noted in the previous post, many of the comments I have received (or which have been immediately sidelined by the Akismet filter built into WordPress) have been spam. In fact, Akismet tells me that it has protected my site from 9,597 spam comments! In addition, my blog settings require that before a comment appears it must be manually approved. So, through a combination of automatic and manual filtering, end users are spared having to read a whole bunch of spam.
Other than the 9000+ comments that I didn’t see, some spam that gets through the filter is obvious. “You have got popped my eye to be able to various opinion of this kind of topic using interesting and reliable Content” [sic] Together with a URL for knock-off handbags (or some such nonsense), the phrasing gives a pretty good clue!
However, other comments – such as the one used for the title of this posting (“Congratulations for the excellent text”) – are not all so evidently bogus.
Sure, such comments are suspicious since they don’t obviously relate to the material in the posting, and they too are generally accompanied by the URL of a commercial web site. It’s even more obvious when the “comment” is a long string of Chinese or Russian characters. It’s unlikely that anyone would post a valid comment to a blog in a language other than that of the blog. And, Google Translate, when used, generally confirms that the spammer is trying to sell something.
Clearly, the intent of such spammers is to try to draw traffic to their web sites. Now the spam can be unsuccessful – because the text is obviously bogus – in which case it is simply deleted. Alternatively, spam can be “successful” when it appears on many blogs and web pages. However, unfortunately, such “success” for a spammer is also their undoing when an item is manually reviewed. For borderline comments, a search on Google will often determine that precisely the same text string has been posted, by precisely the same user, to multiple sites.
So, thanks for the “Congratulations for the excellent text”, but this “comment” also goes straight into the trash!
Now, your final task is to determine which of the following comments (provided verbatim as they were received on this blog) are spam:
