Things seem to be going from bad to worse. The horizontal dashed lines across the upper portion of the monitor are once again being displayed on login – but only occasionally. So much for computers being consistent, logical devices! My error report on the AMD/ATI support forum seems to have disappeared without a trace. Needless to say, there has been no solution forthcoming.
Now, Ubuntu is reporting: “System Problem Detected”. However, when trying to report the problem, using the button provided, Ubuntu indicates that it is sorry but it has experienced an internal error. Even worse, it offers to let me “Send an error report to help fix this problem”. Send an error report on sending an error report? This isn’t looking good.
Attempting to send the latter error report provides the information that “ ‘precise’ is no longer under development but technical support is still available and will give you quicker results than filing a bug here. ” Now, this may well be true, but the first option provided – “I don’t know what to do” – seems less than helpful, and the rest are not any better.
The “Show details” button on the error indicates that the problem type is “Crash” and the title is “unity_support_test crashed with SIGSEGV in xcb_glk_query_server_string_string_length()”
So, the details of the system problem are incomprehensible (to mere mortals); neither “Send error report” nor “Ignore subsequent problems of this type” do anything useful. Time for a new distro?
